THIRTEEN people have been killed and 41 injured after a mum, dad and their four kids blew themselves up at three Sunday church services in Indonesia.

The two youngest suicide bombers - girls aged nine and 12 - wore explosives along with their mother as they attacked a church in Surabaya, police said.

Officers confirmed the father detonated a car bomb outside one building while two sons, aged 18 and 16, used a motorcycle on another church in the city.

National police chief Tito Karnavian said the family had returned to Indonesia from Syria, as ISIS claimed responsibility for the atrocity in a statement carried by its Aamaq news agency.

A total of seven worshippers were killed alongside the family of six, with Indonesia's president condemning the attacks as "barbaric."

The attacks in Surabaya, Indonesia's second-largest city, were among the worst ever carried out against the country's Christian minority.
