SUSPECT WEARING ITALIAN FLAG IS ARRESTED AFTER DRIVE-BY SHOOTING

A drive-by shooter has opened fire on 'African migrants' in Italy leaving multiple victims.

A gunman opened fire on bystanders from a car while driving around the city of Macerata and injured at least six migrants, it was reported.

The severity of the injuries is not known at this stage. Police have confirmed the wounded are of "foreign nationality".

Italian media are reporting the shooter was covered in an Italian flag, shouted "long live Italy" and made a "fascist salute" in an apparent racially motivated attack.

The mayor of Macerata, located about 200km (125 miles) east of Rome, appealed to locals to remain indoors.

The website of newspaper Corriere della Sera said a man fired from a car window at two young African migrants shortly after 11am (10am UK time) injuring one of them.

A short while later another migrant and an African woman were shot.

"Stay at home until further notice. There is an armed man in a car who is shooting in the city," Mayor Romano Carancini said in a statement posted on local Facebook sites.

"Shots fired in Macerata. People injured. Police operation under way. Stay out of the way and avoid open places," the police said on Twitter.

Shortly afterwards, it was confirmed one man had been arrested.

Italian website Repubblica have named the arrested man as 28-year-old Luca Traini.

The shootings happened just days after the body of Pamela Mastropietro, an 18-year-old Italian woman, was discovered cut up and hidden in two suitcases.

A preliminary postmortem on the teenager could not immediately identify her cause of death.

A Nigerian migrant has been arrested in connection with the death.

The suspect, who was denied asylum last year but has remained in Italy, has refused to talk to police.

The death has enraged far-right activists who blamed the Italian government for the teenager's death.
