Baronness Scotland arrives in Downing Street on Remembrance Sunday. She said her refurbishment of the mansion was not a misuse of public money
The taxpayer-funded makeover of Baroness Scotland’s Mayfair mansion included £24,000 for a bathroom, £8,000 to repair curtains and £307 for a lavatory seat, an official letter reveals.
Spending on renovations at the six-storey grace-and-favour home rose by more than £73,000 after the Labour peer became secretary-general of the Commonwealth in April, the document shows.
Her office separately admitted spending £5,000 on top-of-the-range Farrow & Ball and Sanderson paint for six rooms – despite her previously dismissing reports of extravagance as ‘outright lies, half-truths and innuendo’.
The disclosures will be a fresh embarrassment for the peer, who is under pressure over her lavish demands and claims of cronyism.
She was dubbed Baroness Shameless after the Daily Mail revealed she had demanded expensive renovations at a time when the Commonwealth’s finances were said to be ‘dire’.
The former Cabinet minister asked for dozens of additions, drawn up by a celebrity interior designer, including £100-a-roll wallpaper. She insisted it was ‘absolute nonsense’ that she had misused public money.
But a letter to Commonwealth high commissioners included a breakdown of costs, which shows the bill increased by more than £73,000 to a total of £338,622 after she became secretary-general in April, The Times reported.
It revealed that £5,000 was spent to replace locks and £360 for two electrical sockets.
