TAXPAYERS forked out nearly £2million to clear gypsies and travellers from illegal camps last year, The Sun can reveal.
The huge costs were picked up by councils in England and Wales forced to pay out on legal fees, security and clean-up costs.
Leeds City Council was the hardest hit — spending almost £450,000 tackling illegal sites.
It paid out £103,000 on legal fees and £35,000 to clear the land before spending another £310,000 securing areas to prevent travellers from returning.
The bill comes as it tries to slash £55million from its budget and cut at least 300 jobs.
Brighton and Hove Council admitted spending £124,486 last year in “waste management costs” at illegal sites and another £22,305 on legal fees.
Poole Council stumped up £30,000 tackling a group of up to 28 vans, which moved to six different illegal pitches in six weeks last summer. Hull Council spent £13,898, with £1,000 going on one site after five tons of waste — including asbestos — was abandoned.
Government figures show 1,366 caravans were on illegal sites last year with another 1,792 pitched without planning permission on traveller-owned land.
Matthew Sinclair, chief executive of the Taxpayers’ Alliance, said: “More needs to be done to ensure that the law cannot be simply ignored, but also that provisions are made for all sections of the community.”
