A Purdue Pharma, que esta semana foi referida num relatório de uma senadora democrata como sendo uma das empresas farmacêuticas que alegadamente contribui para uma "epidemia de mortes" relacionadas com o consumo de medicamentos opiáceos, revelou, através do Twitter e na sua página oficial, que deixará de promover, junto dos médicos, o popular analgésico OxyContin.

Purdue Pharma L.P. is a privately held pharmaceutical company owned principally by descendants of Mortimer and Raymond Sackler.[1][2] In 2007 it paid out one of the largest fines ever levied against a pharmaceutical firm for mislabeling its product OxyContin, and three executives were found guilty of criminal charges. Although the company has shifted its focus to abuse-deterrent formulations, Purdue continues to market and sell opioids, and continues to be involved in lawsuits around the opioid crisis.

Raymond Sackler (February 16, 1920 – July 17, 2017)[2] was an American physician, billionaire entrepreneur, and philanthropist. Raymond Sackler was, together with his brother Mortimer Sackler, owner of Purdue Pharma, the developer of OxyContin.[3][4][5]
Born in Brooklyn, New York to a Jewish family, in 1920, Sackler was educated at Erasmus High School, and attended New York University where he received a bachelor's degree in 1938. Due to Jewish quotas imposed by the major U.S. medical schools during that era, he started his medical education at Anderson College of Medicine in Glasgow, Scotland, which he attended from 1938 to 1940
