Thought I was gonna die, can't lie': Notting Hill Carnival revellers tell of their terror caught in crush that left 'helpless' police trapped alongside them activating their panic buttons - and leaving colleagues fearing 'another Hillsborough' Videos shared across social media from Monday, August 29 show people fleeing an enormous crowd that was rapidly swelling on Ladbroke Grove, London. At the scene, police officers were caught up and left helpless while women were seen clambering over the railings to escape the impending crush. The situation had reached such a critical point that the Territorial Support Group called in an emergency and warned they were 'getting crushed to death'. Chris Hobbs, a retired Metropolitan police officer, said his first reaction to seeing the crush was to think of Hillsborough. 'I saw police among it helpless. That's the bigger problem than the violence - the potential for another Hillsborough', he added. Dozens of people took to social media to confirm they too were caught up in the carnage - with some sharing how they feared they could have died in the terrifying scenes. The concerns come amid mass criticism of the festival after a chaotic weekend that saw more than 200 people arrested, 74 police officers injured and a 21-year-old man killed.
