Menores em risco de dormir na rua
Marta Salvador Teixeira, de 33 anos, e os três filhos menores vivem na iminência de serem despejados da casa que habitam, na Costa de Caparica. A família de origem angolana vive numa casa erigida pelo marido de Marta Teixeira, há 14 anos, num terreno que pertencerá a um particular e não à Câmara Municipal de Almada, como inicialmente pensaram.


Marta Teixeira está a braços com uma depressão há um ano, facto que lhe valeu o afastamento do restaurante onde trabalhava. Está de baixa e recebe 400 euros mensais. O marido abandonou a família em Dezembro.

No final de Abril, o Tribunal de Família e Menores de Almada deu ordem para que a família abandonasse a habitação num prazo de vinte dias.

Recusando regressar ao país de origem a bem da educação dos filhos, Marta Teixeira teme perder a guarda das crianças, de três, seis e nove anos, se não encontrar uma solução rápida e assegurar condições de higiene e segurança para a família.

No mesmo terreno vivem outras nove famílias que, até à data, ainda não receberam qualquer aviso legal.

Marta Teixeira garante que nunca foi chamada a tribunal para explicar a ocupação indevida dos terrenos.

A Câmara de Almada, em carta endossada à mãe desesperada, diz "não ter fogos disponíveis" para albergar esta família que não tem qualquer tipo de apoio.

There was rare public questioning for President Mugabe over his land-grab programme yesterday during an investment conference — and his answer did not exactly reassure visiting foreign businessmen.

He told the conference, which was convened to raise finance to rebuild the economy after the past ten years of misrule, that “not necessarily” every white farm would be seized.

Mr Mugabe also asserted, to much incredulity, that Zimbabwe had paid white farmers “compensation for developments and improvements”, adding that compensation should be paid by the British Government.

Grande Lisboa: Família atacada na Quinta do Mocho e esfaqueamento no 6 de Maio
Violência volta a bairros
Dois actos de vingança trouxeram de volta a violência a dois dos bairros mais problemáticos da Grande Lisboa. Anteontem à noite, na Quinta do Mocho, jovens descontentes com o facto de uma família de origem angolana ter chamado a polícia devido ao barulho atacaram a casa destes à pedrada. Horas depois, no bairro 6 de Maio, um jovem esfaqueou um homem, supostamente responsável pelo homicídio do seu irmão há dois anos.


De acordo com Osvaldo Sousa, animador cultural, de 33 anos, residente no rés-do-chão do lote 23 da Quinta do Mocho, Loures, "perto da meia-noite, um grupo estava a fazer barulho e, por isso, chamámos a polícia. Depois, perto da 01h00, partiram a porta a pontapé e começaram a chover pedras dentro de casa". O CM constatou no local que todas as janelas que dão para a rua ficaram destruídas. Nada foi roubado. "Tem sido uma constante. Há semanas que não conseguimos dormir. Isto para lá dos assaltos e agressões que acontecem todos os dias", relata Osvaldo.

Já no bairro 6 de Maio, na Amadora, um homem que em 2007 assassinou outro numa rixa foi ontem de madrugada esfaqueado pelo irmão da vítima e agredido por outros moradores do bairro, onde estava proibido de entrar. Foi hospitalizado, mas não corre risco de vida.

Report: 'White flight' causes growing school segregation

Parents said they did not want their children to stand out

White parents are pulling their children out of schools where they are outnumbered by ethnic minority pupils, according to a report that paints a picture of growing segregation in schools in some parts of England.

The Institute of Community Cohesion studied 13 local areas and questioned parents from places such as Bristol, Bolton, Sunderland, Oldham and Blackburn.

It found that where schools were more mono-cultural parents of all ethnicities preferred to send their children to the school where pupils were most like them.

"We heard strong evidence of ‘white flight’ in some areas," the report said.

Middle class parents – who tend to be white – were also removing their children from schools with growing ethnic minority populations because they didn’t want them to stand out, the reports authors said.

The report concluded: "Despite the fact that most people we spoke to in focus groups wanted their children to have a mixed education. Parental choice tended to push people to what they saw as the safe option, where children with similar backgrounds went."

Nick Johnston, one of the authors of the report and a policy director at the iCoCo said parents didn’t want their child to be the odd ones out. "People don’t mind a diverse school but what they do mind is their kid being in a visible minority in a school. This trend has increased in the last few years."

Councils should consider using lotteries to increase school diversity, he added.

ICoCo was set up in 2005 to promote community relations and research cohesion.

In one school in Blackburn, once the number of non-white pupils rose above 60 per cent, white parents began saying they did not want their children to feel different.

At another unnamed school 85 per cent of the pupils were white British at the end of 2005. During the next two terms pupils from 15 to 20 Somali families joined.

"Many white parents reacted negatively, arguing that their children were being disadvantaged by large numbers of non-English speakers. By September 2006, 60 white children had been removed from the school ... and the percentage of black and minority ethnic pupils rose to 45 per cent. But many white families stayed," the report said.

Researchers found evidence of pupils of different ethnicities not socialising even when sharing classrooms and playgrounds.
