HOME Secretary Theresa May’s “vision for Britain” speech threw fuel on the fire yesterday as Tory backbenchers hailed her and blasted David Cameron.
Ms May sparked fresh speculation about her leadership ambitions with plans to axe EU human rights laws and reform schools and hospitals.
It stoked a growing revolt within Tory ranks against the PM. And as the chaos grew, Deputy PM Nick Clegg slapped her down by claiming the Conservatives were veering to the right like a broken shopping trolley.
In her speech, Ms May vowed to stop human rights laws interfering with our ability to fight crime and tackle immigration. In a move which delighted Tory backbenchers, she declared: “All options — including leaving the European Convention on Human Rights altogether — should be on the table.”
