A woman is in a critical condition and three others suffered knife wounds after an attacker went on a stabbing spree in a London supermarket car park.

The unnamed man, described by witnesses as “out of it”, ran through the Sainsbury’s car park, singling out and stabbing women as they got out of their vehicles.

Witnesses described women screaming for help as the attacker stabbed them in the back and legs during the Friday mid-morning rampage in Hampton, west London.

Bystanders tried to distract the attacker, before police used a taser to corner him. A man in his 60s was later arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

A member of staff at the nearby Hampton Pub said: "He only went for the women.

"The man ran through and started attacking them. It didn't seem like they knew him it was completely unprovoked.

"He appeared to be out of it, on drugs or crazy.”

One victims was ferried away by air ambulance in a critical condition and the other three were also treated in hospital. One victim was named as 62-year-old Janet Morsey.

Sandi Hillery, head of care at Shooting Star House Children's Hospice, said she and colleagues distracted the attacker after he stabbed his fourth victim, around 400 yards from the first three stabbings.

She said the attacker was "very tall, unshaven, and dark skinned” and appeared "incredibly anxious and scared".

"When we saw the attacker, we saw him with the knife and we realised that this was a serious incident.

Sally Cadle, the manager at the YMCA centre next door, used paper towels from a café to try to stem other victims’ bleeding.

She said: “I heard a scream, and I just ran outside. I saw a lady who was shouting "I have been stabbed."

"I could see across the car park, there were two women lying on the floor next to their cars.

"I was reassuring them that they would be alright, they were telling me about their plans for the day to try and keep them calm.

Scotland Yard said the attack was not thought to be terror related and police were called at around 10.35am to The Avenue in Hampton after reports of a man in possession of a knife.

A spokesman said: " A man in his 60s was arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder and is currently in custody at a south-west London police station.

“A taser was deployed during his arrest; but it was not discharged.”
