David Cameron set for showdown over new immigrant arrivals

DAVID Cameron is to demand major EU rule changes to stop billions in benefits being paid to arriving immigrants.
The move will be a “critical” plank of the PM’s bid to renegotiate powers back from Brussels, Iain Duncan Smith revealed yesterday.
He also let slip that Britain has recruited major allies — Germany, the Netherlands and Scandinavian countries.
The Work and Pensions Secretary declared: “We have one big battle here. It’s all to do with the European Union.
“The Prime Minister’s very strong on this one. People shouldn’t use the free movement rules just to travel around looking for the best benefit that they can get.
“And that’s the critical bit that the European Commission’s got to understand.”
The new showdown with the EU comes ahead of a fresh influx of thousands of Romanians and Bulgarians when controls are relaxed at the end of the year.
Mr Duncan Smith also revealed a powerful consensus growing across the richer northern European nations on the issue — which mirrors the axis led by Mr Cameron that won a landmark cut in the EU budget this month. He added: “All of us think we need to tighten up.”
He also branded “completely crackers” the system that forces the UK to send benefits and tax credits to 50,000 EU kids living abroad because their parents have worked here.
And he revealed he is looking at extending how long an immigrant must have a rental lease before they can claim benefits, meaning the timeframe could be extended to a year rather than the present few months.
Mr Duncan Smith said: “This is what we inherited after 13 years of a Labour Government that let the floodgates open to everybody coming in who wished to.”
It also emerged yesterday that the PM will hold a secret Chequers summit on Thursday with his new Australian election chief Lynton Crosby to plot fresh vote-winning crackdowns on immigration and welfare scroungers.
Last night Labour leader Ed Miliband said the new Tory plan was doomed to failure. And he said he would ensure arriving immigrants would get paid MORE instead.
Mr Miliband told Radio 5’s Pienaar’s Politics: “Let’s take action around the way employers bring people over here, don’t pay them the proper wage, and then people here find they are undercut.”
